How To Write A One-Page Business Plan

If you own a new business or are just starting one, you would have probably been told that you need a business plan. While this is essential, most business plan templates call for a multipage document that is time-consuming to put together. Time that you could spend actually working on your business. And more often than not, the end result is a collection of theoretical details that most business owners hardly look at again.

So here are seven steps toward creating a one-page business plan that only requires you to spend time on the really important aspects of your business.

STEP 1: DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT YOUR FUTURE TO LOOK LIKE
What do you want your business to look like in 12 months? What annual income do you need to earn? Do you want a 6-figure business, a business that will eventually replace your income or a part time business?

This step is about creating and writing a vision that is authentic to you. One that articulates your true ambitions, desires and purpose. It is not about what you think you should want. Keep it simple, visualise freely and write your vision in the present tense as if you are already living it.

STEP 2: DECIDE ON YOUR DESIRED ANNUAL REVENUE TARGET
What would you like to earn in a year and how many clients you would like to see over that timeframe. Then work backwards to calculate your hourly value.

Say your annual revenue target is $100,000 and you would like to see 20 clients a week for an hour each. Your formula should look like this:

20 clients x 52 weeks = 1,040 clients a year

$100,000 ÷ 1,040 = $96 per hour (This figure will increase when allocating any non-revenue time such as annual leave)

If you manufacture or sell a product then work out how many products must be sold and how much time needs to be invested to achieve those same results.

Next, run a reality check. Based on the previous calculations, ask yourself whether you are prepared to work that many hours or weeks in a year. Be realistic and do not forget to schedule in recreation or vacation time.

Say you now decide you only want to see four clients a day over four days a week for one hour each in order to have four weeks of annual leave. Your formula would look like this:

$100,000 ÷ 48 working weeks = $2,083

$2,083 ÷ 16 clients a week = $130

This shows that your annual revenue target of $100,000 is still achievable if you rework your fee structure or pricing strategy.

STEP 3: DECIDE ON YOUR UNIQUE SELLING POINT
It is important to communicate to your potential client why they would want to choose you over your competitors. They must be able to clearly see a non-monetary difference otherwise they will make a choice based on price. In other words, what is your unique selling point or USP? This could range from a niche service you offer or the extent of your services to your branding or the strength of your credibility.

STEP 4: IDENTIFY THE STRATEGIES THAT WILL HELP YOU HIT YOUR TARGET
Move your focus from short-term goals to a strategic vision that enables you to choose and correct the direction of your course with ease. As long as you are clear about your purpose and future (Step 1), you will be able to write a solid list of strategies.

STEP 5: IDENTIFY WHAT YOU NEED TO STOP DOING
What activities are a waste of your time or energy, and are out of line with your new strategy? Perhaps it is certain administrative tasks, which can be assigned to an assistant whose hourly value will be lower than yours. That will free you up to meet clients. By identifying what you need to stop doing, you will also get clearer about the strategies you need drive forward.

STEP 6: QUESTION EACH NEW TASK OR ACTIVITY
Before starting any new task or activity, ask yourself this question – Is this moving my business forward or is it a distraction? Quite often we hear out about a new marketing strategy someone else has embarked on and get distracted from our own vision, strategies and plans.

STEP 7: CONDUCT A QUARTERLY REVIEW
Review the first six steps every quarter to ensure you are on track and to evaluate whether each strategy is working as planned. A quarterly review allows you to catch anything that is not working early on and make a decision one way or another.

Also remember that your business plan is a guide. It is not set in stone. Circumstances and priorities change with time and regularly revisiting your plan will help you make the necessary tweaks to keep your business on course.

What Are You Creating Next To Grow Your Business?

Creating new things leads to growth.

Whenever I talk to business owners who want to grow their business, my question is “What are you creating to make that happen?”

Many times, they don’t have an answer. Instead, they are just trying to do more of the same things. More meetings, more conversations, more sales, more customers. And if things are working well, then by all means keep doing them.

But in order to improve things in a bigger way, we have to innovate. And innovation means creating and trying new things.

Create New Things To Sell

Creating something new could mean a new product, or program, or package. Having something new to sell can open you up to customers who weren’t buying your previous offer, but might be interested in something a little different.

This often happens with my clients who build online courses and training programs. They are able to sell the program to people who hadn’t signed up for one-on-one services. It’s a different approach, a different price point, and a different opportunity.

Having a new offer opens up conversations with people that had previously been at a dead end. It can create momentum in your business, and lead to growth in areas that didn’t exist before!

Create Things To Reach More People

The best way to reach more people is to create things to help you get in front of them. This is where content comes in!

What can you create to provide value and give to people? Can you send them a blog article? Offer them a free PDF download? Invite them to an event? Engage with them through a video or audio series?

Content is a hot-button word in marketing these days because it works!

It’s the best way to find and reach the people who are interested in what you do. With my clients, I recommend creating 1-4 Nurturing Content pieces each month, and one Catalyst Content piece every 12-18 weeks.

Creating content is what allows you to get in front of people on a regular basis in a positive way, rather than with the same annoying sales pitch.

Creating Systems

Another thing you can create to grow your business are systems and processes. What is your process for following up with people? What is the sequence of communications? What do you provide to build a relationship and earn their trust?

Maybe you need to create a leveraged program, sales process, or customer service system. What are the pieces of the system? Once you create it, you can use it over and over again.

So it comes down to this…

If you want to be growing, then you also have to be creating. The fastest growing businesses and individuals have time built in to create things in these categories for their business.

Sustainable Development Strategy

The developing countries need to play a vital role for the green house gases prevailing in the atmosphere. For this reason, their estimation envisages that the North should arrange required financial aids to the South to acclimatize the changing circumstances of the climate in question. And as such the integrated developing country need to move towards technical hitches for the North. The North is not in a position to accept any remarkable accountability. For negotiating the issue of climate change, an International Negotiating Committee on Climate Change needs to come forward for negotiating the matter as a tentative flow.

In the preliminary meeting, the South stipulated new and additional resources for their economic development. The North was very much interested to know about Southern commitments before dealing with the financial issue. No substantive result was therefore achieved. According to Geneva convention, the North and South are in a situation of confrontation on the question of creating a climate fund. The North expressed their willingness in favour of using the World Bank in this regard, but the South was against the idea. The idea of ‘pledge and review’ was rejected by the South that they should commit themselves to a process and no external could judge their domestic policies. The difference of opinion was evident in the third session of the INC in Nairobi. The pattern was continued when the INC met for its fourth session in Geneva in December 1991. In New York the fifth session of the INC showed the same situation between the North and South. The North was pressurizing the South for accepting the Global Environmental Facility as the funding channel. The North and South were therefore in a position of conflict in the meeting. The mood of the meeting was not improved by suggesting that if no climate change convention was negotiated President Bush would not go to Rio. At the same time to sweeten the threat, the US announced a $75 million aid plan to help curb developing countries green house emission.

Finally, the developing countries thought that the failure to finalize the convention would postpone the prospect of Western aid and technology to help tackle the effect of climate change they therefore accepted the GEF as an ‘interim’ financial mechanism of the convention. Regarding the issue of ‘pledge and review’, countries were required to supply information on their implementation of the convention, and a body was established to look at this information. At last, agreement on the convention was achieved and it was open for signature in Rio. The long discussion about the environmental conferences reveals that both parties have different types of interests and problems. The agreement in Rio was without sufficient commitments from both side. The concept of sustainable development has not been followed by both the parties. The right to achieve economic growth by the South was repeatedly voiced in those conferences and the needs for additional fund were also repeatedly raised. These demands were not sufficiently met by the North. These issues shows that the future relations of the North and the South on sustainable development depends highly on the attitude of the both the parties, though mostly on the attitudes of the North. Although the North has given commitments of financial support, these have not been sufficient for achieving sustainable development. If the North provides adequate financial resources and environment friendly technology at a good price to the South, then the sustainable development will bring co-operation between them, otherwise conflicts will not only remain, but will also be resolved virtually.

In view of the above it is evident that there are differences of opinion between the North and the South on the way of achieving sustainable development. Although, there exists problems, it has also shown that some sort of co-operation exists from previous initiatives on the issue. It is true that some Southern countries allocate much of their hard earned money for defense purpose, but in environmental conferences they always fight for financial support. This case is however not true for most of the Southern countries. Most of the Southern countries are forced to over exploit the natural resources on which their future depends. For that reason, the North have to spare additional financial help to the South to face these environmental challenges.

3 Keys To Starting A Small Business

Since the majority of startup small businesses fail, how can you succeed?

Before we answer this, who am I? I have set up and sold 4 small businesses over the last few years, all of which continue to be successful, so I know a few things about the subject.

Now, let’s get to the main points:

Planning

It is important to know what, when, why, where and how you are going to start your business. Unless you have clear focus, don’t even try, it will just be a waste of your time and energy.

In addition, you will want to do whatever courses are available that might help you achieve your goals. For instance, in my case, before starting my most recent venture, I completed a Certificate 3 in Business Studies, a Diploma in Digital Marketing, a Diploma in Sales, and, a Diploma in Project Management.

Practice

What I mean by practice is not to just dive straight in and learn on the job, no, what will really help you is to observe how SUCCESSFUL people have started the same kind of business that you are attempting to start. How can you do this? One effective way is by getting a job in the industry where you intend to work. Once you have done this, observe the process. If it truly is a successful business, they will have a highly organized and effective process.

Another possibility is actually starting the business. I know, I know, I said don’t do this, however, this suggestion has a little difference. Start the business with no expectations. Become the marketing director, accounts manager, sales director etc… do everything yourself. The problem with this approach is that it will take up huge amounts of time, amounts of time that will be saved, if you are able to work in a successful business that someone else has started. Yes, this suggestion is the harder of the two routes, however what it does do is go from theory to a complete practical knowledge of the industry, to become fully immersed in it.

Pursue

There is a reason why 4 out of 5 small business start ups fail, the rewards are hard to achieve and take inordinate amounts of time to achieve. How can you get over this obstacle?

The key is to Pursue. You need to be focused on your goal, and, never to look away or be distracted from this purpose. How long can you focus on your goal? Only you can answer that! However, realistically, it will take you some years to truly progress in your endeavor. If you are someone who gives up easily, you should really not try to start a business. Instead, look for a well paying job.

The Benefits

If it is all such hard work, why bother? The rewards can be huge. Consider just a few:

*Time – Have a flexible schedule, spend more time with your family or other priorities.
*Passive Income – Depending on the type of business you intend to start, it may keep paying you even when you are not working.
*Capital Gains – You have the possibility of achieving significant R.O.I on the outlay involved in starting your business.

10 Small Steps That Make a Big Difference

In your business, it can seem like big decisions are all-important. In truth, it’s the small things that can trip you up. And it’s the small things that add up to create big change and enormous benefits.

Like money invested over time, small steps have a compound effect. Your choice to take small steps that benefit you, your business, and your impact really do shape your destiny.

Here are 10 small things you can do that will make a big difference in your business:

  1. Thank people. Your team, clients, suppliers, family, friends. When they do something you’re grateful for, let them know it. Who can you speak with, call, or email today with a thank you?
  1. Like your own social media posts. Add to the likelihood your post will be seen by adding your own thumbs up to every post. It all adds up (that compound effect!). Like your next post and make it a habit.
  1. Pay attention to your money. Track what happens to your money in your business, coming in and going out. Even if it feels like the knowledge might scare you, that ongoing awareness has a calming effect. You’ll make better decisions.
  1. Caption your videos. Over 80% of videos on Facebook are viewed with the sound off! Reach your audience with written words on the screen – add captions. This is a DIY you can do in Facebook or YouTube, or you can pay a service (Rev.com is a good one). Do you have a video important for your business online right now? Spend 15 minutes adding captions.
  1. Learn something new. Read a book or an article, watch a video, or take a class. Spend a few minutes every day learning, so you expand your perspective and recognize new possibilities.
  1. Release excuses, take responsibility. When you give someone or something else the blame, you’re also handing over your power. You can’t change what’s not yours. Where are you according blame? Take fully responsibility and see how the situation shifts.
  1. Go above and beyond. What’s one way you can do a little extra today to benefit someone important to you – a client, a family member? When you exceed your own expectations, do that extra bit for someone you value, you’ll enhance that relationship, as well as the one you have with yourself.
  1. Choose connections that truly support you. Who in your circle of connection inspires you to be your best self? Who has a negative effect on you? Decide to spend more time with those who really benefit you. Schedule a time with one of those people today.
  1. Start a new habit. So much of what we do is automatic. We don’t even realize it. When you consciously choose to cultivate a habit that benefits you and your business, you’re taking a small step to create positive behavior. What new habit do you want to create?
  1. Remember your intended impact. One beneficial habit is to remember your intended impact. Before a meeting, a phone call, before you begin your day, remind yourself of the impact you want to have. What do you want to contribute?

With these small, smart things done consistently over time, you can make a big difference in your business. The effect of what you choose to do, how you choose to show up, ripples out. You’ll multiply your success, one small step at a time.

Does the Fruit of the Spirit Impact Your Business?

You may not know it, but when you gave your life to Jesus as your Lord and Savior, all the fruits of the Spirit were planted inside you in seed form. These are the nine characteristics that the Holy Spirit develops in you as a growing Christian. The fruits can only be obtained by the Holy Spirit working within you. The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:22-23 New International Version (NIV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

How does the Fruit of the Spirit impact your business? I like to answer this question in a mathematical formula. Therefore, by solving for the unknown X.

F = Fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23

O = Overflow
The development of the fruit of the Spirit that flows from personal life into your business life.

X = Business
Business in case refers to having a greater effect on the world and having a greater impact for Jesus Christ. In essence, living the definition of a Christian based business.

So, the simple mathematical formula would read: F + O = X

Are you allowing the Spirit to work in your personal life, thereby working in your business? If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to these truths. If you are not, but want to be a follower of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, here is the good news.

Romans 10:9 promises, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” If you have not yet begun your personal relationship with God, understand that the One who created you loves you no matter who you are or what you’ve done. He wants you to experience the profound depth of His care.

Therefore, tell God that you are willing to trust Him for salvation. You can tell Him in your own words or use this simple prayer:

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive my sins and save me from eternal separation from God. By faith, I accept Your work and death on the cross as sufficient payment for my sins. Thank You for providing the way for me to know You and to have a relationship with my heavenly Father. Through faith in You, I have eternal life. Thank You also for hearing my prayers and loving me unconditionally. Please give me the strength, wisdom, and determination to walk in the center of Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you have just prayed this prayer, congratulations!

3 Indispensable Things to Know When Starting a Business

I’ve been speaking to people, and I don’t know if it’s because we’re in the first quarter of a new year or if there’s more confidence in the economy, but I’ve realized that many more people are looking to start their own businesses. As a business owner and social entrepreneur, I think that’s a great thing.

I’m often asked about my thoughts about starting a new venture, and candidly, I love the adrenaline rush, vision driving and strategy development of a new business opportunity. If you’ve been thinking about beginning a new company, there’s no time like the present to start to get yourself into the entrepreneurial mindset to consider if it makes sense for you.

If I were speaking to someone right now starting off as a new business owner for the first time, there are three essential things I would suggest they keep in mind:

  • Do You Really Want to Be an Entrepreneur?

The first question is the toughest, but you’ve got to sit with it for a while. I’ve spoken to many people along the way who have started a business, and then have fallen flat on their face and returned to the safe embrace of a 9 to 5 job. Being a business owner is not as “glamorous” as it may appear.

Sure, you’ll have a flexible schedule (on occasion) and are the final decision maker on large and small decisions, but being an entrepreneur is not for everyone. The truth is you will never work as hard as you do than when you’re a business owner, particularly in the early years. Twelve hour plus days, including weekends, is not uncommon.

Being a business owner means it’s all on you. You may have other people working with you. You may be one of those leaders who allows his team of professionals to be the professionals they are, but as an entrepreneur, your responsibility is to understand every area of your business: sales, marketing, legal, finance and accounting, administrative, marketing, research and development, product development, etc. It takes a great deal of time to know all areas of your business and make sure they are working correctly. It’s an endless process.

  • Do You Really Want to go into Business with Your Friends and Family?

Many times, particularly with small businesses, you’ll have friends or family members decide to go into business together. It makes sense to want to go into business with people you know and trust, but do you want to do that? If there is anything that comes up your relationships can be affected.

A great scenario is this one: you’re working 12 hour days and doing great in your areas of responsibility. Your business partner, and good buddy, perhaps is not as hard working and as disciplined as you are and so resentment begins to build. That’s a recipe for conflict and the likelihood that your business will survive with internal friction exponentially decreases with the increase in tension.

Another possibility is that you don’t go into business with any friend or family as your partner, but perhaps you decide to hire that same good buddy to be one of your first employees because you trust him. Again, what happens if he’s not putting in the hours or work that you think is essential for business success? There have been countless examples of business owners who partnered or hired friends or family only to be in a situation where the business has suffered (as well as the relationship) because of anything from work styles to fraud. It’s very tough to separate your business from your relationships without potentially ruining them.

  • Decide if You’re the Cupcake Baker or the Business Owner

Many people have a passion for something in their lives, and that’s great. Perhaps they love making cupcakes, or they love music and want to sell instruments. Whatever is your passion or interest, if you have one, you will not be only doing that work. As the business owner, the most crucial part of your business is a vision, sales, etc. and the path the company as laid out in your business plan.

If you love painting and you decide to open up a paint shop, you will not be spending your day painting. You will spend your day selling paint, dealing with customers and managing the books. Same goes for cupcakes or even widgets. The business owner that wants to grow his or her company is not going to be baking cupcakes exclusively but also running the business.

If you’re looking to grow, you’ve got to focus on the total “business.” As a business owner, the cupcake making, painting, music or widget making will be only one element, but it’s certainly not the “business.” The business is the promotion of your product, the price point, finances, customers, cash register, accounts receivables and payables, and payroll, etc.

In conclusion, don’t get me wrong. For me, I wouldn’t change anything in the world for my life as an entrepreneur. I love being a business owner and digging into all elements of my companies and brands. It’s invigorating, exciting and no day is the same. Any business owner will tell you, however, that the points mentioned earlier are essential for seeing if the entrepreneurial path is genuinely what you want.

3 Tips For Surviving Commercial Driver Shortage

The shortage of commercial drivers is no longer a news. In 2015, there was a report of over 30 000 empty seats which needed to be filled in the United States and the problem has kept escalating since then. It so surprising that there is a shortage of commercial drivers when commercial driving schools, as well as trucking companies, have been pumping out newly trained drivers. Statistics have shown a good number of certified commercial drivers who are unemployed but they aren’t lining up to fill the empty seats in trucking companies. As a trucking company, the following tips can enable you to survive the shortage of commercial drivers.

Tip 1 – Creating Opportunity for Growth in your Company

Working for a company and remaining in the same position for several years can be discouraging. One of the ways to reduce the turnover of drivers and attract new ones is by providing growth opportunities. Based on the performance of the driver, they can be promoted to other roles such as team captains and supervisors. However, the criteria for promoting the drivers should be made known to every driver on the field in other to prevent those who went promoted from getting frustrated and upset. Also, a company where there are growth opportunities are quite attractive to the younger generation of drivers. Better equipped trucks, automatic transmissions, and improved sleeping cabins are few of the other ways to attract young drivers who seek more comfort and convenience.

Tip 2 – Offering Better Compensations and Performance-Based Incentives.

Offering better compensations to drivers is not an added expense but a means of reducing cost. It reduces your cost of recruiting and training because you get to attract more experienced drivers while reducing the turnover of your existing drivers. Also, drivers who do their job well, arrive on time, drive safely, and are efficient and productive should be given bonuses. This keeps them motivated.

Tip 3 – Making the Job Easy

There are new technologies such as the route optimization software which helps in planning accurate and well-optimized routes. This ensures that drivers never get stuck on the road. It assists them in increasing their productivity and timeliness thus making the job easy and seamless. Also, the software comes with a tracking device which enables the company to know the location of their drivers in real time. This enables the company to be able to send assistance to the driver in case of any problem or breakdown of the vehicle while on the road.

Innovation requires being profitable besides being realistic. Innovation must earn some positive consequence. In a different approach innovation is the use of improved way out to get fresh needs, incoherent or active needs. For your business, it can be a great mechanism for the expansion and achievement of. It helps in becoming accustomed and developing in the business field. In order to save money as well as time in your business integrating, innovation can help. Innovation can also provide the competitive lead to grow and settle in your business in the suitable marketplace.

The Key Factors

To become innovative doesn’t indicate inventing. Businesses receive an enhanced output and performance when innovation is implemented besides creating a better efficiency in work processes. Therefore the integral element of your business approach must carry successful innovation. This implies inducing fresh thoughts, making dynamic products and also getting better the ongoing services. Connecting with consumers so that they can provide with some innovative ideas for the upgrading of various processes or services or products is a viable step. Engaging employees to innovatively think and work can be a turning factor. Market analysis of the requirements of consumers can bring forward new adoptions for change. Other than all of these the factor that boosts innovation is ‘inspirational leadership’.

The Pioneers

Innovative entrepreneurs have something called creative brainpower. This facilitates innovation yet varies from other kinds of aptitude. It is more than the cognitive skill of being right-brained. Innovators bring into use their understanding and intelligence as they influence the innovation agility to generate innovative thoughts. Innovators cautiously, deliberately and without a fail observe for minute conduct particulars in the doings of a customer, supplier, and others. They do so that they can get insights regarding innovative means of performing things. These innovators constantly engage in some sort of dynamic experimentation. Dedicating energy and time to set and assessing ideas using a system of varied individuals offers the innovators very changed outlook. The knack to bond effectively with apparently dissimilar queries, initiatives or dilemmas from diverse grounds is what formulates an innovator.

There are modus operandi, devices, and tactics which you can put together with your ongoing development procedure to be the element of your innovation. Innovation isn’t a supplementary task rather it is a factor of what you carry out. The intention of innovation is to come across an improved link connecting your business and other processes. Your innovative solution should be reasonable financially. It should offer more consumer fulfillment when conveyed and think likely of your necessities for tomorrow.

While there are innumerable mobile apps that are someway similar to each other there are many which stand out. The one which is exceptional must have been out of an innovative brain. The reason why we see a large number of gaming apps is a repetition of an idea over and over. Striking a strategy totally out of the blues can be lucrative. With the prosperity increasing in technology, besides the cut-throat competition, only a revolutionary innovation can bring forward a mobile app profitably.
